Vic Quayle

Picture of Vic QuayleVic has wide experience of employment law following a career in local government and also when running his own company.

He worked for several local authorities in London and Surrey and was involved in all manner of employment issues as he developed his career as a manager.

He has been involved in two local government reorganisations when local councils he worked for amalgamated with neighbouring councils - in one case when still a student environmental health officer in London, and then in Surrey when a principal environmental health officer.

Later when working back in a London Borough managing a team of twenty six professional, technical and administrative staff Vic had a wide range of employment issues to handle including all the usual welfare, grievance, dismissal and performance issues that can arise in any organisation. Fortunately his employer provided good training and support and this proved particularly useful when, in a major cost cutting exercise, the council made huge personnel cuts and in his team six people were made redundant. “An horrific day” he says.

On leaving local government to develop professional information services Vic started his own company with a team of twelve employees together with many part-timers, homeworkers and self employed consultants. More practical experience in employment law followed culminating with the practical application of TUPE, the legislation protecting workers rights when companies are bought out. He was very pleased to be able to ensure that everyone in his company was placed in good jobs.

At this time he was also Managing Editor of a Personnel Law information service published by a leading company in the field, Barbour Index, and worked closely with several of the leading professional bodies in the field.

A spell working with a national charity provided further employment experience, especially in managing volunteers.

Another period was spent working with a major law firm developing a software package that handled employment law documentation for large organisations, a role that included several weeks in-house training which proved very valuable.

In recent years Vic has turned his attention to local councils and has personal experience of the bad employment practices in some local councils when working as a Parish Clerk.

Vic is also publisher and editor of Health and Safety for Local Councils, the companion service to this site on employment law.
